Use Single Quotes As A Standard Way Of Denoting Sarcasm

I propose that we use single quote marks to denote sarcasm in written communication.

Some sort of sarcasm indicator would be nice. It’s there in spoken communication: you can hear it in tone and/or see it in facial expression.

But written communication all looks sincere, and one must pay constant attention to the message’s train-of-thought in order to use context to detect sarcasm. That seems like an unfair advantage that spoken communication has over text. That’s why we ought ta pick some standard way of smirking in type.

Using italics would be nice, but not all input devices support italics. And italics is often used to indicate emphasis, where mistaking sarcasm or vice versa can be disastrous. Single quotes are just sitting there, no one will dance with them. What else are single quotes used for usually? I wouldn’t be surprised if other languages use them for more important matters than English does, though.

the “interpretation rules.txt” and Avid 23.98 exports

I had to figure this out again and here’s what I don’t want to forget for next time:

720, 480, 23.980, "MooV", "AVdv" = 40/33, *, 23.976, *, *, *

The above line, when added to After Effects’ “interpretation rules.txt” file, will force quicktimes exported by Avid erroneously as 23.98 FPS to be correctly interpreted as 23.976 FPS.

It also forces the interpretation to be D1/DV NTSC Widescreen (40/33, or about 1.2121) because I am mainly working on stuff shot with an anamorphic lens on the panasonic DVX100a. This may not always be the case, and I have to remember to re-interpret as standard 4×3 if importing that type of stuff.
